New BGU Degree Empowers Future Leaders to Solve Global Resource Scarcity from the Heart of the Negev

Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) is launching a pioneering Renewable Natural Resources (RNR) undergraduate program, a science-driven degree designed to equip the next generation of experts with the practical tools to solve urgent global challenges like water scarcity, climate change, and resource management. This Renewable Natural Resources (RNR) program, is a rigorous, science-based degree focused on understanding, protecting, and responsibly managing the natural systems that sustain life. Unlike general environmental studies, the RNR program provides a strong foundation in natural sciences—including calculus and chemistry—to prepare students for high-impact careers in research, industry, and public policy.

It is BGU’s first undergraduate degree taught entirely in English.

“Beyond advancing research and education, Ben-Gurion University has a responsibility — rooted in the founding vision of Israel’s first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion — to lead the development of the Negev,” said BGU President Prof. Daniel Chamovitz. The RNR program exemplifies this mission by using the Negev desert as a primary classroom, offering students an environment where sustainability and water scarcity are not just theoretical concepts, but daily realities.

A Living Laboratory for Real-World Impact

The program is headquartered at the Sylvan Adams Sde Boker Campus, which serves as a unique “living laboratory”. Students do not just learn about ecosystems; they live within them, gaining firsthand experience in water sciences, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy in an area where BGU is already recognized as an international leader. This immersive environment ensures that graduates leave with practical skills and the confidence to address resource scarcity and utilization on a global scale, serving as leaders in sustainability in Israel or back in their home countries.

Academic Journey and Innovation

The BSc in Renewable Natural Resources at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev is for students who don’t just want to study sustainability – they want to shape it. The three-year curriculum is structured to build from deep scientific foundations to specialized expertise:

  • Year 1: Focuses on university-level calculus, chemistry, and core natural sciences to understand the mechanics of the natural world.
  • Year 2: Allows students to explore specific interests within renewable natural resources, gradually narrowing their focus.
  • Year 3: Culminates in a student-initiated final project, allowing individuals to design and lead a personal research effort that serves as a professional portfolio asset.

A Close-Knit Community with Global Reach

The first cohort will have both Israeli and international students who will benefit from the connected community that supports high levels of interaction between faculty and peers. This environment is particularly beneficial for international students transitioning to university life, providing a safe and secure setting with immediate access to nature and hands-on learning.

Graduates of the RNR program will be prepared to transition directly into Master’s and PhD programs or enter the professional workforce in a variety of industries including but not limited to high tech, NGOs, and government roles.
